Born in Cyprus into an American family and brought up in French-speaking Africa until she was 6 years old, Katherine’s earliest memories have a dreamlike quality, full of colour, intrigue and nostalgic abandon. Moving to Nigeria and then Kenya, hers was anything but a conventional childhood. Arriving in England aged nine created an unsettling life-style change for such a free spirit but one that Katherine embraced whole-heartedly throughout the coming years. She then divided her time between London and New York, and spent a couple of years in Paris. Travel is in her blood and continues to be an integral part of her life-style.
Coming from a creative family, both Katherine’s mother and sister are artists, she discovered her own talent for Interiors’ styling and worked on a wide variety of film sets.
In the summer of 2001, capitalising on a break between films, Katherine boarded a plane to India armed with a suitcase full of tweeds not quite sure of her mission. Working closely with a village tailor in Kerala, she designed a classic winter coat (The braid coat), perfecting the cut and detail entirely according to her own personal taste. Three weeks later, Katherine touched down at Heathrow with six original coat designs and Katherine Hooker London was born. The mission continues to reveal itself every day.
Like Katherine herself, the designs are wholly individual: vintage East Coast America fuses with contemporary England glinting with subtle references to people and places that have sparked her creative vision along the way.
Archetypal classic form, beautifully sculpted and infused with a modern edge define the essence of Katherine’s coats and jackets. The woman who falls in love with these designs has natural style, she is strong yet understated and has an eye for integral beauty.
In keeping with Katherine’s own free spirit, personal taste is everything at Katherine Hooker London: Over 150 different fabric swatches of tweeds, silks, linens and cashmeres, all pinned in their colour and weave combinations allow clients to match the mood, flavour and even the buttons of their garment exactly as they please.
As such, each piece is unique, inviting the customer to impart as much or as little of their own signature into a coat or jacket which is designed to last a lifetime. Each piece is individually made in England and takes around 4-6 weeks to be completed.
